Material Board

Workshop

Now Available On-Demand!

Welcome!

Hello and welcome! I'm Aubrey and I'm excited to teach you about my favorite interior design tool. When I design a kitchen, bathroom, or a whole house I use a material board as my visual dashboard to track progress, make confident decisions, and ensure a cohesive overall look.

After watching this tutorial, I think you will find that your project will be instantly moving in a more productive direction!

I also want to say congratulations on the home you are about to design and build! You are taking a wise step by planning ahead.

The word "design" is often interchangeable with the word "plan". Beyond the aesthetic reasons for engaging in design are all the benefits of making a plan before taking action. This tutorial is a great first step for your journey toward building a home that serves you!

I am honored to help you create a place that will support the life you envision! Thoughtful design can extend the life of a building, cause less strain on the planet, honor your history, reflect your values, and elevate the way you live your life!

Material Board

noun

In interior design, a material board (also called a mood board or finish board) is a physical or digital presentation that showcases a curated selection of materials, finishes, colors, and textures for a design project. It helps communicate the overall aesthetic of a space.

A material board typically includes:

  • Flooring samples (hardwood, tile, carpet, etc.)

  • Wall finishes (paint swatches, wallpaper, paneling)

  • Countertop materials (quartz, marble, granite, etc.)

  • Tile samples (porcelain, ceramic, terracotta, cement)

  • Cabinetry finishes (wood stains, laminates, paints)

  • Hardware and fixture finishes (brushed nickel, brass, matte black)

  • Plumbing fixtures (faucets, showers, sinks)

  • Light fixtures (chandeliers, pendants, track lighting)

  • Millwork & Doors (baseboards, paneling, casing, doors)

  • Mirrors and Glass (mirrors, shower surrounds)

Designers use material boards to share concepts, ensure cohesive material selections, and make confident decisions.
